The right certifications open doors to buyers, banks, and grants. Know which ones your business needs.

Nepal Standard (NS) Mark

Issued by: Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM)
Products covered: 100+ product categories including cement, biscuits, wire, oil, honey
Mandatory for: Certain products (check NBSM compulsory list) — others voluntary
Cost: NPR 5,000–50,000 depending on product and testing required
Process: Apply at NBSM → submit samples → lab testing → factory audit → NS mark issued
Benefit: Required by some institutional buyers (government procurement). Signals quality.

Handicraft GI / Quality Mark

Dharahara Mark — issued by FHAN (Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal). Required for export of handmade goods.
GI Tags — Pashmina, Dhaka fabric, Ilam tea, Himalayan honey. Protects origin and commands premium price.

DFTQC Food Safety Certification

Food Registration (Food Act 2023)
All food manufacturers, processors, importers must register with DFTQC. Annual renewal. NPR 1,000–10,000.

Lab Testing
DFTQC labs test for microbiological, chemical, and physical parameters. Cost: NPR 2,000–15,000 per product.

Health Certificate
Required for food export. States that product meets Nepal food safety standards. Valid for one year or per batch.

Nepal Organic Board (NOB)

Nepal Organic Standard (NOS) — national organic standard. Recognized for domestic market.
3-year conversion period — no synthetic chemicals for 3 full years before certification.
Annual inspection — NOB or accredited inspector visits farm/processing unit each year.
Cost: NPR 10,000–50,000/year depending on farm size and complexity.

PGS Organics — Low-Cost Alternative

Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) is a peer-to-peer organic assurance approach — farmers verify each other's practices. Recognized by Nepal and some domestic buyers. Cost: NPR 500–2,000/year.
Managed through local farmer groups under ANSAB, IFOAM-affiliated groups, or NOB-approved PGS networks.
Good for: Local/domestic organic market, haat bazaar, direct-to-consumer. Not sufficient for EU/USA export.

GIZ-GRAPE II support: GIZ provides co-financing for certification costs for eligible SMEs in value chains it supports (tea, ginger, herbs, handicrafts). Contact your Province Hub to check eligibility.

Fair Trade

Fairtrade International — most recognized globally. Requires minimum pricing, premiums for community development, no child labour, democratic governance.
World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) — membership-based, for fair trade businesses. Recognized in EU and USA.
Cost: USD 2,000–10,000/year depending on turnover. WFTO membership cheaper.

Other Social Certifications

SA8000 (Social Accountability) — labor rights standard. Required by some global buyers (H&M, Primark).
B Corp Certification — global social enterprise certification. Growing recognition in EU/USA. bcorporation.net
Women-owned Certification (WECONNECT) — certifies >51% women ownership. Opens procurement from multinationals and donors.
Rainforest Alliance — for agriculture. Strong in tea, spices, cocoa. Required by some EU supermarkets.
