Quality Control

3-Stage QC System

1. Incoming Quality Control (IQC)
Check all raw materials before accepting delivery. Visual inspection + random sampling. Reject below-spec inputs immediately.
2. In-Process Quality Control (IPQC)
Check at critical process steps. Catch defects early rather than at the end. Record and track defect trends.
3. Final Quality Control (FQC)
Inspect finished goods before packing. AQL sampling (Acceptable Quality Level) — standard: 2.5% defect rate.

QC Tools

Checklists — simple, effective. Create a checklist for each critical quality attribute.
SPC (Statistical Process Control) — track defect rates over time. Free Excel templates available.
Fishbone diagram — identify root causes of quality failures. Good for team problem-solving.

Sustainable Supply Chain

EU buyers now require proof of sustainable sourcing (EU Deforestation Regulation, CSRD). Build it now before it becomes mandatory.

EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

From 2025, products imported to EU (coffee, cocoa, soy, cattle, timber, palm oil, rubber) must prove they do NOT come from deforested land after December 2020.
Nepal exporters of timber, paper (lokta), wood products must provide geolocation data of source plots.
Work with FSC-certified suppliers or get FSC certification to prove compliant sourcing.

Carbon Footprint Basics

EU buyers increasingly ask for Scope 3 emissions data (emissions from your supply chain).
Start by measuring: fuel used for transport, electricity consumption, waste generated.

How to Build an Inclusive Supply Chain

Track: % women-owned suppliers, % smallholders (<2 ha), % Dalit/Janajati-owned. Baseline establishes impact claim.

Train smallholders on quality, food safety, record keeping. GIZ / SNV often co-fund training costs.

Sign fair price contracts
Multi-year offtake agreements with smallholders reduce their risk and ensure your supply. Include a floor price clause.

Measure and report
Track income uplift, jobs created, % women in supply chain. Use GIZ-GRAPE II M&E templates.
